Lead Social Protection Specialist, World Bank
Andrea Vermehren is an economist from the University of Hamburg, with a postgraduate degree in development economics from the DIE in Berlin. She started her career working for the German development agencies (GIZ, KfW) on social policy and social development programs in Latin America. Vermehren joined the World Bank as a social protection specialist in 1999 supporting governments in setting up social safety nets based on cash transfers. She has since worked on social protection policy development as well as different kinds of safety net, youth development, and community development programs in Latin America, South Asia and Africa. In her current work as a lead social protection specialist in the World Bank’s Africa region, Vermehren is promoting the inclusion of behavioral insights and interventions in safety net programs.
